What a pattern recognition test measures

Pattern recognition is the ability to see order in new information: what repeats, what changes, and what rule connects one step to the next. It is a core part of fluid intelligence — reasoning that does not depend on knowledge you already have.

In aptitude testing, pattern recognition means shape-based puzzles: grids with a missing piece, figure series, and odd-one-out questions. Employers usually call the same skill abstract reasoning, and the most common format is the 3×3 matrix grid.

Almost every question uses one of a small set of rules:

  • Rotation. A shape turns by the same amount in each step.
  • Positional movement. An element moves through set positions, one step at a time.
  • Addition and removal. Shapes are added or taken away as the pattern moves along.
  • Series and progression. Something grows, shrinks, or counts up step by step.
  • Odd one out. All items follow one rule except one — you find the exception.

Pattern recognition and IQ

Pattern tasks sit at the heart of most IQ tests. Raven's Progressive Matrices and the matrix sections of full IQ batteries both use them, because finding rules in new information is a strong measure of fluid intelligence.
