Start review →What is a figure series test?
A figure series shows several abstract pictures in order and asks which option continues the sequence. The rule can change rotation, position, number, size, shade or shape. Harder questions combine two or three tracks or move two objects at different rates.
The timed mode uses 15 questions in 18 minutes because that is the published format for SHL Verify Interactive Inductive Reasoning. Other tests use different timings: ACER lists 30 abstract-reasoning questions in 35 minutes, while PI and CCAT are faster mixed batteries that combine visual questions with verbal and numerical items.
How to solve figure sequences
- Track one feature at a time: position, direction, count, size, fill and shape.
- Compare every transition, not just the first and last panels.
- For alternating rules, compare panels 1–3–5 and 2–4 separately.
- When two objects appear, test whether their tracks are independent, paired or exchanging roles.
