Matrigma Practice Test

Matrix Reasoning Practice for the Matrigma Test

Matrigma is one of the most widely used matrix reasoning tests in Northern European and global graduate recruitment. Practise with our free 12-question, 15-minute provider-style mock and a 10-question untimed warm-up — both with full explanations and pattern guides.

About the real Matrigma assessment

What the real Matrigma test looks like

The format details below describe the actual Matrigma assessment as published by Matrigma. Our practice test above is independent and uses our own question bank.

Matrigma is a classic 3×3 matrix reasoning test originally developed by Assessio and now distributed by Hogan Assessments. The test uses purely visual matrices — no language, no numbers — and is used by employers worldwide to measure general cognitive ability independent of educational background.

  • Test name

Matrigma (sometimes referred to as the 'Matrigma test' or 'Hogan Matrigma'). Originally developed by the Swedish firm Assessio; now published under the Hogan Assessments umbrella.

  • Question style

3×3 visual matrix grids with one cell missing and six answer options. Same visual format as the questions on this site. Language- and culture-neutral by design.

  • Timing

The classic Matrigma is 35 questions in 40 minutes; the 'Adaptive Matrigma' (the modern version) uses a shorter adaptive flow of about 12-15 questions in 12-15 minutes.

  • Adaptive scoring

Adaptive Matrigma adjusts question difficulty in real time based on your answers. Confidence on the first few questions raises your potential score ceiling. The legacy classic Matrigma uses fixed-difficulty items in increasing order.

  • Employer usage

Widely used by Nordic employers (Volvo, IKEA, Scania, Tele2) and a growing list of international employers using Hogan's broader assessment platform.

Skills being tested

What this practice trains

  • Abstract visual reasoning
  • Inductive pattern recognition
  • Logical sequencing across cells
  • Multi-rule transformation tracking
  • Consistent accuracy across mixed difficulty

Common mistakes

The four most common ways candidates underperform

  1. 1

Treating Matrigma like a speed test

Matrigma's per-question budget is more generous than Aon or SHL. Accuracy beats raw speed — careful elimination on harder items is the better strategy.

  2. 2

    Missing combined rules

Matrigma's hardest items combine two transformations (e.g. rotation plus size change). Verifying both axes before committing prevents a near-correct wrong answer.

  3. 3

Confusing six-option layouts with four-option layouts

Matrigma uses six answer options per question, not four. Eliminate two obviously-wrong options first to shrink the decision down to the usual 1-in-4 problem.

  4. 4

    Over-checking on Adaptive Matrigma

On the adaptive version, hesitation on early items lowers your difficulty ceiling. Commit to confident answers quickly to keep the harder items in play.

How to improve

The most efficient preparation path

Matrigma's rule families overlap exactly with the families covered on this site: rotation, symmetry, shape progression, positional movement, scale change, and combined multi-rule transformations. Practise the free 10-question test to set a baseline, study any pattern families you miss, then take the 12-question Matrigma-style mock to add the timing layer.

Frequently asked

Matrigma test FAQ

What is the Matrigma test?
Matrigma is a non-verbal matrix reasoning test originally developed by Assessio and now published by Hogan Assessments. It uses 3×3 visual matrices where you select the missing cell from six answer options, measuring general cognitive ability independent of language and education.
How many questions are on the Matrigma test?
The classic Matrigma has 35 questions in 40 minutes. The Adaptive Matrigma (the modern version most employers now use) is shorter: typically 12-15 questions in 12-15 minutes, with the difficulty of each item adjusting based on your previous answers.
Is Matrigma timed?
Yes. Both versions are timed, but Matrigma's per-question budget is more generous than fast-paced tests like Aon cut-e. The classic version gives about 70 seconds per question; the adaptive version gives roughly 60-90 seconds depending on item difficulty.
What is the difference between Matrigma and Adaptive Matrigma?
Classic Matrigma is fixed-length (35 questions in 40 minutes), with difficulty rising linearly through the test. Adaptive Matrigma is shorter (12-15 questions), and the difficulty of each question adjusts based on whether the previous answer was correct. Most modern employers use the adaptive version.
What companies use Matrigma?
Matrigma is widely used in Nordic and European graduate recruitment — Volvo, IKEA, Scania, Tele2, and many large public-sector employers in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Hogan Assessments has expanded its global distribution, so it now appears in international graduate hiring as well.
Can you practise for Matrigma?
Yes. The rule families Matrigma uses — rotation, symmetry, shape progression, positional movement, scale change, and combined transformations — are exactly the families covered on this site. Targeted practice on each family plus timed mock attempts is the most efficient preparation path.
Is this an official Matrigma test?
No. This practice material is independently created and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or provided by Hogan Assessments or Assessio. The questions are our own, designed to give you Matrigma-style practice — not real Matrigma items.
