APM test-day playbook

Forty to sixty minutes, how to spend them, and when a clock appears.

Before

  • Sit Set I as the orientation it is meant to be, then the three Set II checks in order. The third check is where the form spends its difficulty; a drop there is normal and tells you which rule lesson to repeat.
  • Ask whether Set II will be timed. Pearson's pages say untimed; the historical administration timed Set II after Set I; an employer running the APM through Korn Ferry may do either. Rehearse both once.
  • If the invitation is Raven's Adaptive rather than the booklet, the items are this shape and the draw is adaptive: read the lesson on the Raven's you will actually meet.

During

  • Count the rules before you pick. Say what changes for each element separately; an item that seems to have one rule that almost works has two.
  • Check the candidate piece against every rule you found. Each wrong option is built to satisfy some of them.
  • Once per row is checked on the column too. Correspondence finding is the skill: which element belongs to which rule.
  • Under a clock, protect the last twelve. The early Set II items are the cheapest points; the late ones are where the time goes.

The score

A single raw score and a percentile against a norm group. The form is built to spread the top fifth of the population, so a percentile here is not comparable to one on the Standard test. No pass mark is published; where the APM is used in hiring, the employer sets the bar.

Sources: Pearson (timing, scoring, population); Yang et al. 2023 (Set I’s role, the historical clock on Set II); Korn Ferry on its use of the APM. Read 2026-09-21. This is independent practice material. It is not a Pearson product and uses none of Raven's items. Figures come from Pearson's own pages and the primary literature; where only third parties state a figure, the text says so.
