Set I is the orientation set: twelve items, one of each theme the full test uses, easy enough that most people get most of them. The real form uses it to familiarise you with the task and to decide what comes next. The course uses it the same way: meet every rule once before the rule lessons take them one at a time.
What you see: a 3x3 with eight options, the shape of every APM item. What you do: for each, name the rule in a word before you look at the options.
The tactic
- Say what changes across row one for each element separately. One rule per element is the APM's grammar.
- Check the column. Most rules run both ways, and the column is where a candidate answer that fits the row is caught.
- Eight options: the wrong ones are the right ingredients arranged by a different rule. Check arrangement, not ingredients.
What Set I is telling you
A miss here is a rule you do not yet see quickly. Note which lesson it belongs to, steps, once per row, adding and taking away, and go there next.
