Set A is the Standard test’s opening: a field of pattern with a square missing and six pieces below. The site’s bank builds it five ways, a jigsaw of paths and enclosures, a reflected whole, a field that steps in spacing or count, components that rotate through positions, and a few where the missing region is the union or the difference of the field’s parts.
What you see: a field with a piece missing. What you do: continue what the field is doing, across the gap.
The tactic
- Trace every line that meets the hole. The correct piece continues each one at the same angle and spacing. This alone solves most jigsaws.
- Look for an axis. If the field is symmetric, the piece is the mirror of the region across the axis; oblique axes are the deliberate difficulty.
- Look for a step. Lines getting closer, counts rising, elements rotating position by position: the piece sits at the right point of the series, not merely near it.
- If the field looks like parts stacked on parts, ask which parts the gap keeps. A few Set A items are logic in disguise.
The wrong pieces
A path that does not connect, the right texture at the wrong phase, the mirror of the wrong region, the step before or after the right one. Each fails the edge check or the series check.
